Oscar Snub List: David Oyelowo, Clint Eastwood, Ava Duvernay, Jennifer Aniston & Jessica Chastain Not Nominated for The Academy!
The announcement of the Oscar nominations every year always brings a whole series of surprising nods and shocking snubs. This year was definitely not different as we saw several big names that we all had been looking forward to in clinching a nomination and even an award on the big day on Feb 22 being omitted from the nominee announcement. Some of the big snubs this year are:
David Oyelowo: The British-Nigerian Actor who has been on the spotlight recently for his acclaimed role as Martin Luther King in Selma was definitely a big shocker, as he did not make the Oscar’s nomination list for best actor. Although Selma was nominated in the best-picture category, it was quite shocking that the movie did not get nods in other categories including, director, original screenplay and editing categories. “Certain movies prove themselves to be critic films and not Academy films,” Fandango Oscar expert Dave Karger said. “I think Drive was one a couple years ago. Selma may be one of those this year, too.”
Clint Eastwood: Despite the strong waves made by American Sniper, which got nominated for best picture, actor (Bradley Cooper), editing and adapted screenplay, the veteran filmmaker was not snubbed in the directing category. “I thought Clint Eastwood might get a director nom,” Film Historian/critic Leonard Maltin said while noting his Directors Guild of America award nomination. “But there are (eight) best-picture nominees and five spots for the directors. Not everyone is going to get in.”
Ava Duvernay: Definitely, another conspicuous snub in the directing category of the Academy’s nomination list was Ava DuVernay, whose critically revered Selma has taken a hit in the past few weeks regarding disputes over its depiction of former President Lyndon Johnson.
Jennifer Aniston: The talented actress had been widely commended for her astounding role as a chronic pain sufferer in the ‘Cake‘ and coupled with the aggressive campaign she did as well, she was unable to make the list of the top contenders in the ‘Best Actress’ category. Film Critic ‘Maltin’ was not all that surprised about the snub as he said: “She gives a very good performance in Cake. I don’t know if its an award performance, but it’s a very good performance,” Instead, “I was pleasantly surprised with Marion Cotillard,” who got into the top-contended category for her role in French drama Two Days, One Night.”
Jessica Chastain: This year, everyone thought Chastain was going to be lucky enough to clinch an Oscar nod, considering that she has been a two-time nominee. Her role as a gangster’s wife in ‘A Most Violent Year‘ with Oscar Isaac was getting to gain traction with its increasing media buzz but it looked like the movie hit the theaters too late.
