At Least 22 Egyptian Football fans died in Clashes at Cairo Stadium!
The Egyptian football league last Sunday was suspended indefinitely following a deadly clash between ticketless football fans and police outside the Cairo stadium. This incident left at least 22 fans killed after police fired tear gas at Zamalek supporters that were trying to gain entry to a match against the city’s rivals. The match between local club Zamalek and ENPPI had to be called off because Zamalek fans who were without ticket trying to storm into the stadium, causing a deadly stampede, according to BBC News.
“Because of the stampede, some choked and died from asphyxiation, while the rest died from being trampled,” a police official told the state-run newspaper, al-Ahram.
Witnesses told BBC News a fence had collapsed as the crowd surged forward. “Suddenly the security forces began firing tear gas and birdshot all over the place,” one said.
