Most Coveted Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or Awarded to French Immigrant Drama ‘Dheepan’

After several days of high-end fashion being displayed coupled with the review of new movies and documentaries from all genres, the 68th Cannes Film Festival was brought to a close on Sunday, May 24th with Jacques Audiard’s Sri Lankan refugee drama taking the festival’s most coveted top honor, the Palme d’Or.

“To receive a prize from the Coen brothers is exceptional,” said Audiard. “There’s only the Dardenne brothers (that could match it).

The choice, as selected by a jury led by Joel and Ethan Coen, was unexpected and has been heavily criticized for the thriller-like conclusion of its otherwise patient depiction of immigrant adjustment.

Dheepan” is about a trio of Sri Lankans who pretend to be a family in order to flee their war-torn country for a housing project in France.
